The monument and its history. Having been in the hands of both the French and the English by turns, the city of La Rochelle negotiated its autonomy from both kingdoms. In 1372, during the reign of Charles V, the city finally became French. A major programme of fortifications strengthened the port's defences, with the rebuilding of the Saint Nicolas and Chaine towers. These two towers came to be the symbol of the renewed alliance with the King of France. The towers were also landmarks for navigation. The Saint Nicolas tower: Construction of this tower probably began in the early 14th century. Built on piles, the tower started leaning during building work and was completed around 1376. It is composed of a cylinder surrounded by four integrated turrets and a strong spur facing seawards. The tower was used both for defence purposes and as a residential quarter, with the usual areas of a Royal residence: hall, bedchamber and chapel. There were separate passageways for both functions, to avoid soldiers and residents meeting. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, the tower was used as a prison from time to time. Originally, the way into the tower was on the ground floor. The Chaine Tower: Built between 1382 and 1390, the Chaine tower was 34 metres high (currently 20 metres) with a poivriere roof. The tower was the residence of a harbourmaster until 1472. He levied the taxes due from the ships using the port and controlled the chain which enabled the port to be closed upon the orders of the mayor. The tower was destroyed by an explosion during the Fronde, when it was being used as a powder store, and remained open to the heavens for 300 years. Since 2008, the tower has housed an exhibition about the departure of emigrants to Canada. • Aedes Ars Caesar Tower Architectural Model Kit

    Price: £64.99

    Brand: Aedes Ars

Description: Aedes Ars Caesar Tower Approximate number of pieces: 8,250 Difficulty degree: 8/10 Sizes: 400 x 500 x 415mm Scale: 1/170 These kits contain high quality ceramic pieces (which simulate the stones and the original materials), cardboard structure, glue, scenic material, and instructions. Aedes Ars produce a wide range of building sets which are used for the scale reproduction of some historical monuments such as castles, churches, bridges, and lighthouses, (some are recognised World Heritage Sites), as well as diverse miniature buildings of typical country constructions. The monument and its history The Tour Cesar (Caesar's Tower) is situated in Provins (Seine et Marne, France) at the top of the very hill over which the town is placed. It possesses some splendid views of the Brie Plateau. A legend dates the origins of Provins to the Roman era. Therefore, going by this legend, the large tower of Provins would have been built by Julius Caesar. In reality, the tower was built in the 12th century under the reign of Henry the Liberal (1152-1183). It can be confirmed that Caesar's Tower existed from 1137 because it is mentioned in a letter from Thibaud II where he designated the tower as the border for the markets of Champagne. It has had a great many uses: it has been a prison, shelter from possible attacks; its essential role has been military and has had several names such as the King's Tower, the Grand Tower and the Prisoners' Tower. Later, in the 15th century, the English tried, and succeeded, in taking control of the Tower of Provins and it was left in a bad state. It was the early 17th century when the mayor, François de Beaufort, decided to repair and put a new roof on it. The base of the building is surrounded by a heavy brickwork defensive wall, added by the English after 1432, known by the disdainful name of Pâté aux Anglais. It has a square ground plan at the base which becomes octagonal at half height (it is the only donjon with this characteristic), flanked by four turrets. Inside, below, a large vaulted hall was used as a deposit for military administration. On the upper floor, another hall of the same dimensions but higher, called the guards' hall, was the communication centre of the Tower. From here, the steps lead to the lower hall, the governor's room and the parapet walk. The dungeons where the prisoners were kept are reached by narrow corridors that are inside the walls. Even today one can still see perfectly the Pâté aux Anglais as well as the guards' hall, the governor's room and the other sections. The tower was roofed in 1554, and the installation of the bells, which came from the bell tower of the church of Saint-Quiriace, was undertaken in 1689. It all makes Provins one of the most beautiful medieval complexes in the environs of Paris. The city included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is also the exceptional setting for many period shows. • Aedes Ars Puerta Nueva De Bisagra Architectural Model Kit

    Price: £59.99

    Brand: Aedes Ars

Description: Aedes Ars Puerta Nueva de Bisagra Approximate number of pieces: 7,000 Difficulty degree: 7.5/10 Sizes: 330 x 430 x 300mm Scale: 1/220 These kits contain high quality ceramic pieces (which simulate the stones and the original materials), cardboard structure, glue, scenic material, and instructions. Aedes Ars produce a wide range of building sets which are used for the scale reproduction of some historical monuments such as castles, churches, bridges, and lighthouses, (some are recognised World Heritage Sites), as well as diverse miniature buildings of typical country constructions. The monument and its history The Puerta Nueva de Bisagra (new gate) is in the province of Toledo, in Spain. Called the Puerta Nueva (new), to differentiate it from its homonym, la Vieja (old), they are both of Arab origin, although in the Nueva the only Arab remnant lies in the name of Bisagra, or Bib-Shala or Puerta de la Campiña (countryside gateway) and some remains of horseshoe arches in the interior. Its exterior façade stands between two circular towers with the upper part in dressed ashlar work. The entrance archway, also in dressed stone, opens in the centre. Above it the imperial coat of arms of the city stands out, crowned by a pediment. Behind the exterior façade is a courtyard and another interior building with square towers, windows and spires with polychrome tiling. Its history is not very well known until its restoration in the mid-16th century, in 1550. There is evidence of it being awarded by Alfonso VIII of Castile to the nearby church of Santiago del Arrabal in the 12th century. The remodelling of the set of buildings was due to the need to improve the route between the city and the newly built hospital of San Juan Bautista, also called the hospital of Cardenal Tavera. It was the Toledo architect Alonso de Covarrubias who led the remodelling works, these being extended until the mid-16th century, by then under the reign of Felipe II and the direction of the architect Juan Bautista Monegro, although the real architect and artist behind the remodelling was Covarrubias. Includes all the necessary materials to build a high quality model. HISTORY: It is situated in the north of the La Coruña region peninsula, in Spain, some 1,600 metres from the city centre. It is the oldest, most illustrious and representative monument in A Coruña and the main element of its coat of arms, being the oldest roman lighthouse still in use. According to the legend, it was here where Hercules cut of the head of the tyrant Gerion and after burying him built the tower over his grave. It was built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD, in the time of the Emperor Trajan, as a lighthouse for navigation. The tower quite possible lost its maritime use during the Middle Ages on becoming a fortress. It was in the 17th century when the Duke of Uceda commissioned the architectural restoration to Amaro Antune, who built a wooden stairway that crosses the vaulting as far as the upper part where he placed two small turrets to support the beacons. Before undergoing its definitive reform, the tower had a prismatic body with a square base, the exterior of which had a stone wall with two doors in the lower part with asymmetrical windows that ran along it until the top floor. A complete reconstruction was carried out during the reign of Carlos. The neo-classical work was completed in 1791 and led by Eustaquio Giannini. It currently has a height of 68 m and three sections. The third supports the glass cylinder that protects the lantern.

  • Aedes Ars La Herradura Lighthouse Kit

    Price: £29.99

    Brand: Aedes Ars

Description: The monument and its history Its name corresponds to the same name of the cove, harbour and country house that are in its environs. It is situated over an old watchtower, known as Punta de la Mona, within the district of Almuñécar, in Granada, Spain. This tower was built during the reign of Felipe II, like the majority of those marking out the area, and which formed a complex surveillance network of towers that communicated with each other through fire and smoke signals, to warn of the incursion of possible enemies and to provide navigation aid at night. According to chronicles of the time the link was so perfect that any Berber attempt at invasion was immediately transmitted to the cities, giving them time to prepare troops. This system formed a rudimentary telegraph, the effectiveness of which was clearly demonstrated over many years of uninterrupted use. Those in charge were military keepers, predecessors of the lighthouse keepers. The construction of the tower is of a truncated cone shape, of limestone masonry and lime mortar with tiled ceramic layers of brickwork. Its main measurements are 11.20 metres high, 8.80 m diameter at the bottom and 5.75 m diameter at the crowning. The recovery project of the tower for its use as a lighthouse again was passed in 1989. The main characteristics of the La Herradura Lighthouse are: nominal reach 15 miles. Height of focal plane over sea level 141 m, over land 14 m, luminous intensity of 20,000 candle power and night appearance of white signal lights repeated every 5 seconds. These kits contain high quality ceramic pieces (which simulate the stones and the original materials), cardboard structure guides, glue, scenic material, and guided instructions. Aedes Ars produce a wide range of building sets which are used for the scale reproduction of some historical monuments such as castles, churches, bridges, and lighthouses, (some are recognised World Heritage Sites), as well as diverse miniature buildings of typical country constructions. • Aedes Ars Eilean Donan Castle Architectural Model Kit

    Price: £57.99

    Brand: Aedes Ars

Description: Aedes Ars Eilean Donan Castle Approximate number of pieces: 4,600 Difficulty degree: 8/10 Sizes: 900 x 340 x 230mm Scale: 1/135 These kits contain high quality ceramic pieces (which simulate the stones and the original materials), cardboard structure, glue, scenic material, and instructions. Aedes Ars produce a wide range of building sets which are used for the scale reproduction of some historical monuments such as castles, churches, bridges, and lighthouses, (some are recognised World Heritage Sites), as well as diverse miniature buildings of typical country constructions. The monument and its history Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic Eilean Donnáin), is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan means simply island of Donnán. The island is dominated by a picturesque castle. The original castle was built in the early 13th century as a defence against the Vikings. By the late 13th century it had become a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth). In 1511, the Macraes, as protectors of the Mackenzies, became the hereditary Constables of the Castle. In 1539 Iain Dubh Matheson, chief of the Clan Matheson died whilst defending the Castle on Eilean Donan island against the Clan Mac Donald of Sleat on behalf of the Clan Macrae and Clan Mackenzie. In April 1719 the castle was occupied by Spanish troops attempting to start another Jacobite Rising. The castle was recaptured, and then demolished, by three Royal Navy frigates on 10-13 May 1719. The Spanish troops were defeated a month later at the Battle of Glen Shiel. The castle was restored in the years between 1919 and 1932 by Lt. Col. John Mac Rae-Gilstrap. The restoration included the construction of an arched bridge to give easier access to the castle. In 1983 The Conchra Charitable Trust was formed by the Macrae family to care for the Castle. A curious distinction is that it has one of only two left-handed spiral staircases in a castle in Great Britain, as the reigning king at the time of building held a sword with his left hand. One strange feature of the castle today is the grey field gun from the Great War, positioned outside the building by a war memorial and fountain dedicated to the men of the Macrae clan who died in the war. Eilean Donan is the home of the Clan Macrae. In 2001, the island had a population of just one person. The castle is one of the most photographed monuments in Scotland and a popular venue for weddings and film locations. . Aedes Ars produce a wide range of building sets which are used for the scale reproduction of some historical monuments such as castles, churches, bridges, and lighthouses, (some are recognised World Heritage Sites), as well as diverse miniature buildings of typical country constructions. The monument and its history The Château de Chillon (Chillon Castle) is an island castle located on the shore of Lake Geneva in the commune of Veytaux, at the eastern end of the lake, 3 km from Montreux, Switzerland. The castle consists of a big number of independent buildings that were gradually connected to become the building as it stands now. The oldest parts of the castle have not been definitively dated, but the first written record of the castle is in 1160 or 1005. From the mid 12th century, the castle was home to the Counts of Savoy, and it was greatly expanded in the 13th century by Pietro II. The Castle did change hands through treaties. It was made popular by Lord Byron, who wrote the poem The Prisoner Of Chillon (1816) about François de Bonivard, a Genevois monk and politician who was imprisoned there from 1530 to 1536; Byron also carved his name on a pillar of the dungeon. The history of Chillon was influenced by three major periods: the Savoy Period, the Bernese Period, and the Vaudois Period. Chillon is currently open to the public for visits and tours. According to the castle website, Chillon is listed as Switzerland's most visited historic monument. There is a fee for entrance and there are both parking spaces and a bus stop nearby for travel. Inside the castle there are several recreations of the interiors of some of the main rooms including the grand bedroom, hall and cave stores. Inside the castle itself there are four great halls, three courtyards, and a series of bedrooms open to the public. One of the oldest is the Camera domini, which was a room occupied by the Duke of Savoy - it is decorated with 14th Century medieval murals. . No of pieces: 2,800 Difficulty degree: 7.5/10 Sizes (Lx Wx H): 410 x 290 x 200mm Made from real ceramic pieces which simulate stone. Includes all the necessary materials to build a high quality model. HISTORY: A trullo is a small, old stone building, made up of a square or circular base that supports a cupola in the form of a cone which at the same time acts as the base for the pinnacle. The pinnacles give a special elegance to the conical structure, which are normally white and made from hand-carved stone: they are used to adorn the trullo and represent the signature of the constructor. Some people say that the meaning of the pinnacles is symbolic, in the same way as the illustrations on cupolas. The most diverse examples of trulli and pinnacles are in Alberobello (southern Italy), declared a World Heritage Site. The trullo is a small building, with little light and very few windows and doors. Each trullo is built by hand and the blocks of stone on their walls were placed without any type of mortar. The particular symbol of each trullo is always placed over the cupola. The origins of the symbols are not known exactly but were painted only on private homes as a symbol of a good omen.

Description: Aedes Ars La Mancha Windmill Architectural Model Kit SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES: Scale: 1/125 Approx. No of pieces: 1,250 Difficulty degree: 7/10 Sizes (Lx Wx H): 280 x 200 x 340mm Made from real ceramic pieces which simulate stone. Includes all the necessary materials to build a high quality model. HISTORY: For time immemorial mankind has used wind to obtain energy. All the information we have about windmills points to the fact that the first constructions of this type in Europe were in the 10-11th centuries. The best examples of Spanish windmills, though restored, are in Campo de Criptana, to the northeast of Ciudad Real and in the Toledo region town of Consuegra; all of them within the Castilla la Mancha community, known popularly for the Don Quixote routed, the character from Spanish literature intimately linked to the region and its windmills. The type of windmill in Campo de Criptana is known as the tower windmill. Typical of this kind of windmill is the construction method, based on stone and whitewash, with a roof in a conical form and wooden frame. The ground plan is circular, with a thick wall that supports a rotating cap for facing the wind. The movement of the rotating cap is made directly over circularly fitted iron rings. The typical Manchego windmill has four sails with a central windshaft and fifteen or more sailbars. This kind of pole gives it a solidity that enables it to have long and narrow sails.

Of a typical noble appearance, it possesses an imposing Keep, 34 metres high, which led to, via a drawbridge, a rectangular-shaped tower, divided into three floors and a square ground plan basement reached by a spiral staircase; this is extended to the crenelated terrace with four bartizans that go down to the ground in the form of four slender towers. Each floor has a large vaulted hall with grilled windows. The tower houses the coats of arms of Alfonso Pérez de Vivero and of his second wife María Manrique de Benvides. It also has a simple square precinct with circular defence towers in the corners and central bailey. The castle was restored by the Valladolid County Council and transferred to the Castilla y León Regional Government and is currently the headquarters for the Castilla y León Regional Parliament.
